Once described as having a voice of 'chocolate and steel', Beccy isn't easy to pigeon hole as a singer. It's clear that her musical heart lays somewhere within the Soul and blues genres but with the ability to deliver hard rocking 'ballsy' vocals reminiscent of Etta James or Janis Joplin there also comes a silky smooth and somewhat treacley tone hiding underneath, with no better example of this than her vocal take on the Nina Simone classic 'Misunderstood'.
Beccy was born into a musical family and it was inevitable that music would become the main focus of her life too. Her Father was a professional singer and guitarist, touring with everyone from Manfred Man, The Searchers and Dickie Valentine. Her Mother's Uncle managed and promoted US acts such as The Drifters and George Benson and more recently he brother found World Wide success as lead singer of chart topping 90's boy band 911. Beccy's Mum taught her to read music and play the recorder aged five before taking up the 'cello at seven. She progressed through the usual ABRSM and Trinity graded exams and went on to study music at GCSE and A-level but singing was to prove her true passion. The first time Beccy sang in front of anyone other than her Mum and Dad was at the age of 14, in Glagow studio the Soul kitchen owned and run by acclaimed song writers and producers John McLaughlin and Gordon Goudie. She was so nervous she wouldn't even take her coat off and took a lot of takes to find her voice - but even then they said she had something special. With an instantly identifiable voice and unique phrasing - an Etta James edge that a 14 year old white girl shouldn't have. From that point on Beccy's confidence started to grow allbeit at a slower rate than her vocal and musical skills and to say she hasn't looked back is an understatement. At just turned 17 Beccy headed for the London to be 'discovered' becoming an ever present on the audition circuit. Another young girl living for the weekly print of The Stage newspaper with the determination and nerve to make it on her own merit. A lucky break came when Beccy auditioned for Tim Byrne(now Simon Cowell's creative director)and was promptly signed to his production company ByrneBlood (Blood being Victoria Blood - former head of marketing at BMG) and along with 4 other girls became 1/5 of girlband 'Deluxe'. It was here that Beccy gained her first lot of studio experience, along with extensive live work show casing for the majors and performing in front of 30,000 strong crowds at pop festivals and supporting other UK acts on tours, (all this whilst continuing to study for her A-levels part time!). Alas, the band didn't get a recording contract, although the talent was certainly there. Deluxe were just a little before their time.
It did however, prove to be a fantastic platform for Beccy and she was approached by various producers and song writers to put vocals down on their tracks. More work followed and as one job lead to another Beccy started session singing in the UK and Germany. As well as singing back up and fronting various professional live bands from 20 piece big bands to jazz trios, Tribute acts and different function bands throughout the North and South of England. In 2009 she relocated to Wiltshire and spent time performing with different functions, Blues and jazz bands.
Beccy is currently session singing as well as teaching and also has the pleasure of performing with professional functions band 'Time Out', based in Somerset and eight piece jazz, funk and soul band 'Thank Funk', based in Berkshire.
